FDA Advisors Endorse New HIV Prevention Drug
A new drug shown to prevent HIV infections has won the endorsement of a
panel of US Federal Advisors. Truvada is the first drug of its kind,
clearing the way for a landmark approval in the fight against HIV.
Baystate Dr. Danel Kiest, Chief of Infectious Diseases told us, “The
preliminary approval by the FDA was for preventative medicine,
anti-viral medicine which is the combination of two pills and is called
Truvada. It’s based on a study in which they gave sexually active gay
men, who did not have HIV, medicine every day.” Kiest adds that the
study was successful and protected them at a rate of 44%. While the
study of Truvada was positive, the FDA still needs to approve it’s usage
in healthy people.
